Principal Report

By Mr Jamie Madigan Principal

Last Sunday, we celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi (Body and Blood of Christ). The feast celebrates the Real Presence (not a symbol) of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. It is for this reason that Catholics venerate the Eucharist with such reverence.

On Sunday 19 June 2022, Pope Francis celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), with Mass in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.

The Feast of Corpus Christi is a time for Christians to remember that God will meet their basic needs to eat and to be filled with the joy and amazement of receiving loving nourishment from Jesus Christ, Pope Francis said.

At the same time, the Pope emphasized, the Eucharist must also move Christians to action. “We can evaluate our Eucharistic Adoration when we take care of our neighbour like Jesus does,” the Pope said on Sunday before the recitation of the Angelus at St. Peter’s Square in Rome.

“There is hunger for food around us, but also for companionship; there is hunger for consolation, friendship, good humour; there is hunger for attention, there is hunger to be evangelized. We find this in the Eucharistic Bread — the attention of Christ to our needs and the invitation to do the same toward those who are beside us. We need to eat and feed others.”

The Pope’s remarks reflected on Sunday’s Gospel reading, the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes from the Gospel of Luke.

Pope Francis reflected on the manner of the miracle when Jesus fed so many who lacked food. “The miracle of the loaves and fishes does not happen in a spectacular way, but almost secretly, like the wedding at Cana — the bread increases as it passes from hand to hand. And as the crowd eats, they realize that Jesus is taking care of everything,” said Pope Francis.

“This is the Lord present in the Eucharist. He calls us to be citizens of Heaven, but at the same time he takes into account the journey we have to face here on earth. Jesus Christ’s self-giving presence is key to understanding the Eucharist” he said.

“We certainly need to nourish ourselves, but we also need to be satisfied, to know that the nourishment is given to us out of love. In the Body and Blood of Christ, we find his presence, his life given for each of us. He not only gives us help to go forward, but he gives us himself — he makes himself our traveling companion, he enters into our affairs, he visits us when we are lonely, giving us back a sense of enthusiasm.”

“This satisfies us, when the Lord gives meaning to our life, our obscurities, our doubts; he sees the meaning, and this meaning that the Lord gives satisfies us,” the Pope explained. Everyone is looking for the presence of the Lord, because “in the warmth of his presence, our lives change,” the Pope added.

“Without him, everything would truly be grey,” he said. “Adoring the Body and Blood of Christ, let us ask him with our heart: ‘Lord, give me that daily bread to go forward, Lord, satisfy me with your presence!’”

The pope also prayed that the Virgin Mary may teach us “how to adore Jesus, living in the Eucharist and to share him with our brothers and sisters.”

New Child Safety Standards as of July 1st 2022

By Ms Katie Murray-Fawcett Deputy Principal of Wellbeing

This time last year the Victorian Government announced new Child Safety Standards that will be introduced by 1 July 2022. The implementation of these new standards will further strengthen child safe environments within our College and protect children from abuse. The revised standards support more consistency within schools and have been developed following the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Child Safety Standards are supported by the Ministerial Order No. 1359 which defines the actions our College must take to meet the requirements associated with the new Child Safety Standards. The school has implemented a Child Safety Team that has worked on documenting how the College is currently meeting the new standards and what we will do further in moving forward.

The 11 standards below will replace the current existing 7 standards that are now in place.

  • Culturally safe environments
  • Child safety and wellbeing is embedded in leadership, governance and culture
  • Child and student empowerment
  • Family engagement
  • Diversity and equity
  • Suitable staff and volunteers
  • Complaints processes
  • Child safety knowledge, skills and awareness
  • Child safety in physical and online environments
  • Review of child safety practices
  • Implementation of child safety practices

Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

By Mr Paul Sammut Head of Mission & Faith

Litany to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Heart of Jesus full of goodness and love,

Heart of Jesus, inflame my heart with love for You and for those around me.

Grant, O Lord, that every moment in this day, in all my dealings with others, I may keep in mind your words “…as long as you did it to one of these My least brothers and sisters, you did it to Me.”

Grant that I may rule all my dealings with others according to Your command “…love one another, as I have loved you.”

Grant that I may think of them as You think of them and me.

Grant that I may feel toward them as You feel toward them and me.

Grant that I may speak to them and of them as You would were You in my place.

Grant that I may bear with them as You bear with me.

Grant that I may seek opportunities of doing good to them in a kindly way – seeing You, serving You, in them.

Place Your thoughts in my mind, Your love in my heart, Your words on my lips – that I may learn to love others as You love me.

Amen

The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Today we celebrate the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The feast is celebrated 19 days after Pentecost. This feast has been practiced since the 12th Century and gifts us with the beautiful image of the heart. The heart symbolizes love, love not in the sense of infatuation or attraction but sacrificial self-giving love. This sacrificial love is at the centre of our Catholic Faith. The Sacred Heart represents the love that God has for us, so much so that He is willing to suffer and die for us. It teaches us that to give true love is costly but ultimately live giving. “There is in the Sacred Heart the symbol and express image of the infinite love of Jesus Christ which moves us to love in return.” (Pope Leo XIII)

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Pray for Us!

Our Captain's End of Term Speech

By Ivanka Portelli School Captain and Social Justice Representative

Term 2 Assembly College Captain Speech

It gives me great pleasure to be standing here, once more addressing our College community. I would like to begin by commending you all on your achievements, hard work and successes this term. In my first, inaugural speech I encouraged you to contemplate upon how you will write the pages of your story this year, what memories you will fill your chapter with, the accomplishments that you will achieve through belief in yourself and hard work and opportunities that you will have seized. I encourage you now to reflect upon this and remember that you and only you get to decide how your story is written, so what will you continue to fill your pages with?

I encourage you all, to create goals for this term, goals that motivate and inspire you, to work towards something you are passionate about and goals that align with your strengths and values. Consistently working on our goals leads to the power of positive momentum, set your goals and be patient and persevere in achieving them.

Believing in yourself and your abilities is the key to achieving your successes, because you are capable of achieving great things once you believe and have faith. We are all unique and possess our own strengths and God given talents, so don’t waste your abilities trying to be someone you’re not, be the best version of you and embrace it.

Always, remember that each person is made in the image and likeness of God, this is the essence of being a human and because of that we are called to respect and honour all human life, irrespective of our differences. God has given us a unique human dignity that calls us to live in communion with Him and with our brothers and sisters. Our College motto teaches us to “Act Justly” this is about standing up for the inalienable rights of others to give one another what is their due, that being respect, love and dignity.

The choices we make, the things we say and the things we do have an impact on ourselves and the people around us. Our decisions help shape to identify who we are to ourselves and to other people. Our words and actions have meaning and power, always make the conscious effort to make the right decision and learn from the times when we have failed to do so.

Continue to seize any opportunities that come your way, when an opportunity presents have the courage to not let fear stop you. Our College provides us with many opportunities to succeed and thrive, so embrace these opportunities, and embrace the journey of stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying something new.

As you endeavour on your journey, we should always challenge ourselves to become a better person, a better student and a better friend. Achieving success will mean something different to each person, it is about reaching for the highest that is in us, success is a personal standard that you can define. Through hard work, sacrifice and perseverance you will achieve success. I quote “success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be.”

Finally, be kind, be grateful, have faith and take the time to appreciate all the little miracles in your life. I leave you with this, and I quote “The potential for greatness lies within each of us.”

Thank you, and may God bless you always.

    Student Leaders Corner

By Meena Babawy & Angel Yesudas Deputy College Captains

    Angel Yesudas
    Meena Babawy

Q1. What does servant leadership mean to you?

    Angel:

It means to put aside my needs and focus on the wellbeing of those around me and my community. It means to walk in the footsteps of Jesus.

    Meena:

Servant leadership to me is to give more than take, it's being selfless and committed to serving everyone with your gifts and knowledge, servant leadership to me is listening, empathizing, stewardship, awareness, and commitment to growth and development of people and community.

Q2. Why did you want to be a part of the 2022 Student Leadership Team?

    Angel:

I wanted to use my passion and skills and give to the school. I wanted to put in the effort to make the school a better place.

    Meena:

I think the biggest part of why I chose to be part of leadership in 2022, is to learn how to grow as a person, to strive for personal development to then be able to understand the different people around me better. Other reasons include:
    - Learning leadership to use in the future
    - Learn the meaning of responsibility
    - Learning confidence both public and personal
    - And learning how to communicate with different people.

Q3. What is your role in the Student Leadership Team and what are your responsibilities?

    Angel:

I am a Deputy College Captain. My responsibilities include Bulletin allocation, attending meetings, representing the school at events, leading and supporting the younger leaders and being a voice for all the students at CRCCS.

    Meena:

I am a Deputy College Captain and it is my responsibility to help the EAL students and their families to be able to have the best transition into our school with supporting them with their language and helping them understand a new culture. I am also one of three international and refugee representatives in our leadership team!

Q4. What is a goal you would like to achieve this year in the Student Leadership Team?

    Angel:

I would like for our team to work with the students and establish a form of peer support within the school, so students can talk to fellow students about things they are going through or want to share.

    Meena:

There is not just one specific goal I like to achieve this year, I think it is all about the bigger picture at the end where we can look back and see the changes that we made through small steps, so for now, it is all about the small steps we take. We need to make sure that our non-English speakers students are getting along well with other students, and making sure that everyone feels proud of their heritage and culture, so to celebrate every student.

Q5. What is the legacy you wish to leave behind?

    Angel:

I wish for our 2022 team to leave a legacy of perseverance, strength, courage and selflessness. I particularly wish for our Year 10 Leadership Team to leave the school and be seen as servant leaders, who lead for the benefit of others.

    Meena:

The legacy I would like to leave behind is that I and resilient, caring and a giver.

Q6. What are some exciting projects or proposals the Student Leadership Team are currently working on, that you are passionate about?

    Angel:

Currently, we have multiple proposals that members of the team are working on. I had previously presented a proposal to have sanitary items in the female bathrooms and I am looking forward to seeing it take place at the school. I am also looking forward to the Cultural Diversity Day proposal as well.

    Meena:

Some of our female student leaders worked on a project on implementing a sanitary products program in the female bathroom. Although we started on this project last year, we still are finalising the details. My fellow student leaders and I are passionate about this. We want all of our female students to feel comfortable during their menstrual cycles. It is our duty as leaders to make sure that everyone feels comfortable and safe at our college.

    Social Justice - Semester 1

By Ms Matilda Mattar Social Justice and Service Learning Leader

At the beginning of 2022, staff were encouraged to pick a ‘lucky dip Saint.’ My Saint was St. Oscar Romero. Romero so simply and beautifully states:

“We cannot do everything and there is a sense of freedom in realizing that. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest”.

When we stop and think of this statement, we realise that this is a solid reflection of our mission of the social Justice team at our college. We do our best, and allow God’s grace to guide, protect and lead us in the direction He sees best fit.

This year’s Caritas theme is “for all future generations”, and the most amazing thing is that our college community have kept last year’s motto, a quote by St Oscar Romero, “aspire not to have more but to be more” at the forefront of our minds. I know this because I have been able to witness, the big hearts in action as students bring our college motto “Live Fully Act Justly” to life.

Lots of moments and memories were created during Semester 1. We have been able to celebrate so much as a community, for example St Pat’s day, the great feast of Easter, pancake sales, bake stalls, barbeques, card making for the special female in our lives, all of this, while fundraising for Caritas and for our brothers and sisters in Uganda. To top it off, we ended the term celebrating the diversity and richness of our multicultural community. The Social Justice Team greeted students at the front gate, asking them to write their names, or hello in their native language. It has been an eventful semester, a huge success and this is thanks to you.

Thank you to everyone who has gone out of their way to make this possible. I speak on behalf of the team, when I say that you are the main drive for us. You keep our passion alive, and your response only makes us more inclined to do more for this wonderful community.

Your giving hearts and humble smiles don’t go without notice and your actions speak louder than words, we are a special community, and every individual plays a special part. So once again THANK YOU!

Semester 2 is going to be jam packed, and we can’t wait to continue to create a more just community.

God bless and keep safe over the holidays.

    Refugee and Multicultural Week

By Mr Anthony Zammit Learning Area Leader EAL

Last week, the College celebrated Refugee and Multicultural Week. The Social Justice Team and Student Leadership Team organised a range of initiatives to celebrate the wonderful cultural diversity of our college community. As part of National Refugee Week, the activities included an Iraqi cultural performance, a special edition student bulletin, library activities, student bilingual prayers, front gate activities and a multicultural food stall with all money raised going to the College Uganda Project. The theme for this year was Healing.

The highlight of the week was the Iraqi cultural performance. The heavy rain did not stop many of our Iraqi students, led my Ms Nrmin Ajem, to entertain us with traditional Iraqi song and dance in their cultural dress. It was great to see so many students participate in traditional dance.

Refugee and Multicultural Week reminds us of Matthew 25:35-40, "I was a stranger and you welcomed me". Let us continue to be ambassadors of Christ and advocate for the rights of those who need our support. The 2022 theme aims to highlight aspects of the refugee experience and help the broader community to understand what it is like to be a refugee. It promotes harmony and togetherness. The theme unites individuals, communities and organisations from many different backgrounds behind a common cause. The common theme is a reminder that, regardless of our differences, we all share a common humanity (Refugee Council, 2022).

Let's continue to live out our College motto, Live Fully Act Justly, and let others appreciate the fullness of life.

Balsam Alkateb, Sevr Haddad, Noor Babawy, Maryan Butrus, Selivya Hadad, Melak Al-Qesblahad and Ms Nrmin Ajem

    Term 2 SACCSS Sport Summary

By Mr Rannoch Wilkinson Sport Co-ordinator

    Term 2 SACCSS Sport Summary

Term 2 was a big term for interschool sport at CRC Caroline Springs with a variety of sports and students from across all four Year levels competing.

    VSAC Swimming

Early in the term we had 2 students selected to represent SACCSS at the All Schools Swimming Championships, competing against other sporting associations across Victoria. Chloe Burke 8KU and Emma Nguyen 9MK participated in multiple events across the night with Emma swimming a couple of relays in the age group above to ensure all events were filled. Well done to both girls on their selection and representing both SACCSS and CRCCS.

    SACCSS Cross Country

In May we had a team of around 40 students compete in the SACCSS Cross Country event at Brimbank Park. The students had been selected based on results from our school event at the end of term 2. We were hopeful of some strong results as this was one of the biggest teams we had sent in a number of years and included some very good runners.

All students performed well throughout the day, pushing right to the end of the race to ensure every point was gained for our team. We managed to finish 3rd in both the boys intermediate and the intermediate aggregate (boys and girls) categories. Well done again to all runners in the school event and the SACCSS day in term 2.

    Intermediate Futsal

As reported earlier this term, we had 2 teams defending their titles this term with the girls, reigning division 1 champions and the boys the inaugural division 2 champions in 2021.

Both teams played well across the day with the girls just missing the final on goal difference and the boys qualifying for the final but sadly being out classed by a smooth St Monica’s team. We will be back in 2023 striving to regain the trophies and continue our good run in futsal competition.

    Junior Girls AFL

At the end of May we had a team of girls head out for the Junior Girls AFL tournament at Wyndham Vale Football Club. Oddly enough, the team this year were all Year 7 students but they were all keen to compete hard and show their football skills.

The girls played exceptionally well in tough, cold and windy conditions coming away with 2 wins, a draw and 1 loss from their 4 pool matches. Unfortunately, we missed the opportunity to play off in a final with the top 2 teams just ahead of us on the ladder, but our girls should be proud of their effort across the day. I am sure with these girls all being the top age year 8 for junior football in 2023, they will be keen to show the other schools what they can do.

    Year 8 Boys AFL

The last sport event in term 2 was just last week when the inaugural Year 8 Boys AFL tournament was held. The weather was just as cold and blustery as previously experienced by the girls but our boys were determined to not let this stop them from achieving their best.

The boys won their 2 pool matches to qualify for a semi final against the second ranked team from the other pool. Even a downpour during this match couldn’t stop our boys from the run and drive to win the semi-final and set up a grand final against the other undefeated side at Salesian College. Salesian proved in the final that they were a well-oiled machine running out comfortable winners over our team and taking out the trophy.

Lucas Caruana 8BA was named best on ground in the grand final and he and all the boys should be proud of their efforts in their preparation and in competition across the day.

    House Carnivals

Lastly, I would like to publicly congratulate the winners of age group champions at our house carnivals earlier this year. They were announced and awarded in the recent end of term assembly but is important to recognise the performances of these students in our community.

Congratulations on the following award winners and Jackson for winning the House Athletics in 2022:

    Year 7 Premier League

By Mr Rannoch Wilkinson Sport Co-ordinator

In Term 2 our Year 7 students have participated in weekly sporting competitions with teams competing in Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Netball and AFL football. For many, this might have been their first experience of weekly sport and most likely representing CRC Caroline Springs in SACCSS competition against other Catholic Colleges. Our students carried themselves well throughout the selection process, training regularly, leaving class at various times and competing against opposition on game day.

Term 2 was a positive sporting experience across the term with 6 of our 8 teams qualifying for semi-finals in week 8 of term. They were the Boys and Girls Basketball teams, Boys and Girls Soccer teams, Girls Netball and Boys AFL. Unfortunately, only the Netball team were successful in their Semi and qualified for the Grand Final. In the Grand Final, our girls played well and supported each other right to the end but were beaten by a very good Salesian team. Our girls showed that they deserve their place in division one and will be back next year to try again.

All teams fought out the matches well and should be proud of their efforts across the season. Thank you to all students who participated in tryouts and competition and the coaches for their hard work across the term.

We now look forward to Year 9 Premier League who will start competition in week 1 of term 3, followed by Year 8 towards the end of term 3 and into term 4.

Year 10 Japanese City Exploration Excursion

By Mr Shingo Gibson-Suzuki Japanese Teacher

On Wednesday 8 June, the Year 10 Japanese class were fortunate to attend an excursion to the city and immerse ourselves in aspects of Japanese culture, particularly food. This was our first Japanese trip, as all our past excursions were cancelled due to the pandemic, making this day even more special. We were given the opportunity to visit Melbourne Central and Emporium and look at the major Japanese stores, such as MUJI and UNIQLO, as well as smaller stores and restaurants. The highlight of the excursion was definitely Dohtonburi restaurant, where we were able to make and cook our own delicious Okonomiyaki (Japanese savoury pancakes). Overall, the day was a fantastic experience, and a much-needed break from exam revision. A huge thank you to Mr Gibson-Suzuki for organising the excursion!

    Year 9 Photography

By Ms Cathy Mackay Art/Wood Technician

These black and white still life photographs gave our students the opportunity to use photo editing software to enhance and adjust their individual photos.

Students used light, collected objects, and composition to explore the design elements of form, tone and balance.

    Year 10 Photography

By Ms Cathy Mackay Art/Wood Technician

The dictionary describes Surrealism as “a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images.”

Our Year 10 students have explored this concept with these great examples of original, irrational and a little crazy photographic compositions. They have used photoshop to rearrange, crop and place objects within their work.

Do something amazing in Semester Two!

By Dr Chris McGillen Head of Music Performance

The Concert Band Program at Catholic Regional College Caroline Springs is growing each term with the wonderful new instrumental options available: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone and Percussion. The Beginner Concert Band rehearses every Friday and have already performed on a regional Schools Tour and at the inaugural Winter Concert on 2 June.

Free trial lessons are available at the start of term three and instruments are available for hire through the School. Lessons start at $19 per week for a half hour group lesson.

Please contact Chris McGillen at cmcgillen@crccs.vic.edu.au to organise a trial lesson for your child. Learning an instrument is an enriching experience that can change lives.

    Materials and Woodwork

By Mr David Sammut Materials Technology Teacher

After a long break from practical work, our students have hit the ground running with some amazing handmade wooden products.

Our woodwork students were tasked with making a device holder that can hold a multimedia device used on a regular basis and the results were amazing. In a short time, students were able to research, design and produce device holders which fit their device specifications as well as making informed design decisions on how to accommodate for any peripherals.

Our year 8 materials students were able to design chopping boards which were handmade and completed using natural finishes.

Ms Mackay and I are so proud of our students. They have set the bar high for all future Materials and Woodwork classes and pictures of their completed work will be used to inspire the next group of students that take the subject.
