Principal Report

By Mr Jamie Madigan Principal

Last Sunday, we celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi (Body and Blood of Christ). The feast celebrates the Real Presence (not a symbol) of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. It is for this reason that Catholics venerate the Eucharist with such reverence.

On Sunday 6 June, Pope Francis celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also known as Corpus Christi, with Mass in St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.

Pope Francis said ,"in the Eucharist we contemplate and adore the God of love. It is the Lord who does not break anyone, but breaks Himself. It is the Lord who does not demand sacrifices, but sacrifices Himself. It is the Lord who asks for nothing, but gives everything. To celebrate and live the Eucharist, we too are called to live this love".

The Solemnity of Corpus Christi, meaning the “Body of Christ” in Latin, provides an opportunity for the Church to focus on Christ’s real presence in the Eucharist, which Pope Francis urged us all "to go out with enthusiasm carrying Christ to those we meet in everyday life. We become a church with the jug in hand, which awakens thirst and brings water. Let us open our hearts in love, to be the spacious and hospitable room where everyone can enter to meet the Lord. Let's break our life in compassion and solidarity, so that the world sees through us the greatness of God's love. And then the Lord will come, He will surprise us again, He will make Himself food for the life of the world. And it will satisfy us forever, until the day when, in the banquet of Heaven, we will contemplate His face and rejoice without end".

Return to Onsite Learning Friday 11 June

We are all very excited and eagerly looking forward to the return to on-site learning, with all students to return on Friday 11 June. Therefore, as per the Victorian Government and the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV) guidelines, the remote learning program ended at the conclusion of classes on Thursday 10 June. This means if you choose to keep your child/children home after this date, that we can no longer continue the remote learning program as teachers will be teaching their timetabled lessons in the classroom.

It is really important to remind parents/carers that, if your child is ill or is feeling unwell, they must not attend school. They must remain home and seek medical advice. Any student who demonstrates symptoms of illness whilst onsite will be isolated in the College sick bay or another separate room and parents will be contacted to collect them.

As the main risk of introducing COVID-19 to the school environment is from adults, close proximity between adult members of the school community should be avoided, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up. Access to the school site is restricted for anyone other than immediate school staff and students. Parents should only enter the College grounds when essential, having contacted the school by phone or email prior to entering.

We understand that some families may feel anxious about this move back to on-site classroom teaching and learning. I can assure you that this decision has been taken on the basis of the best health advice available to our state.

Face Masks:

Face coverings will again be mandatory for people aged 12 and over when inside. Therefore, all staff students and visitors are now required to wear masks to and from school, as well as on the College premises (indoor and outdoor).

In the past, many students have not brought a face mask with them to school, despite prior communication asking them to do so. We have handed out a large number of disposable face masks to students who have required them. However, our own stocks of disposable face masks are very low, and we will no longer be able provide students with face masks.

Therefore, I ask all parents to ensure that their child has a face mask with them at school at all times as per Government guidelines. Students without a face mask will not be able to attend classes.

Conclusion of Remote Learning:

Firstly, I would like to congratulate all students on the completion of a further two weeks of remote learning. Overwhelmingly, students have been very engaged, connected and involved in their learning throughout this period. A big thank you also to parents and families who have supported the students through this unusual learning journey this term. Attendance rates across the year levels have been very high, with an overall average of 97% attendance across the school. Below are the attendance rates for each year level:

  • Year 7: 98%
  • Year 8: 97%
  • Year 9: 96%
  • Year 10: 96%

I would also like to express my thanks and gratitude to our teaching staff, who have gone above and beyond this term to ensure students had a positive remote learning experience. They have worked long hours and have tirelessly re-written curriculum, course outlines and assessment tasks to again accommodate remote learning. They have also undertaken various new and contemporary modes of pedagogical delivery, including the use of flipped learning, video conferencing and MS teams throughout this period, to enhance the students remote learning experiences. These key learnings will benefit the ultimately have long-term benefits for College, and will enhance future learning and teaching experiences.

We also thank the College IT, maintenance, counselling, learning diversity, library, support and administration teams who have been actively working on-site over the past two weeks. They have done an exceptional job throughout the remote learning period and have also been actively, preparing the College for the return of on-site learning.

Faith & Mission

By Mr Paul Sammut Faith & Mission Leader

The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Traditionally, in the

Church’s Liturgical Year the month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus reveals such a beautiful truth of Christ’s infinite love for us.

If we want to know how God loves, we need only to turn to what is revealed to us in the incarnation of Jesus Christ and His ultimate sacrifice of the cross.

When we begin to understand God’s love, we will feel encouraged to become increasingly more compassionate, generous and faithful.

This is the higher virtue that God calls us to aspire to. Holy Scripture refers to the heart as what directs the whole being, soul and body, to what it considers its good; this is the Sacred Heart of Jesus. How beautiful would society be if we realised the true beauty of the Scared Heart of Jesus? How different would our world be with no hatred that creates so much division? Only if we contemplate the heart of Jesus will we ensure that our heart is freed from animosity and indifference.

On today’s feast let us ask our Lord to give us a good heart, capable of having compassion for other people.

Ask A Priest Session

Last Thursday 3 June, we had our ‘Ask a Priest’ session. These sessions are an opportunity for our students to ask any questions that they have about their Catholic Faith. Due to remote learning, the session was via MS Teams where we were joined by Fr Simeon, the Assistant Priest at St Catherine of Siena Parish, Caroline Springs; Miss Calandra, Mr Sammut and students – Balsam Al-Jamil, Nicole Fry, Olivia Hannet, Ivanka Portelli, Isabella Rustevski and Christina Stanford.

Taking part in the 'Ask a Priest' session was a great opportunity because it isn't often that you get to ask questions like this to a Priest. It was a really good experience to be able to get our questions answered and learn ways we can connect and grow closer with God.’

The 'Ask A Priest' session last Thursday was a fruitful and refreshing experience! It was an opportunity to ask any questions that we may have about the Catholic faith in a supportive environment.’

Relaunch of the Instrumental Music Program - Semester 2

By Dr Chris McGillen Head of Music Performance

CRCCS will be launching an exciting new Instrumental Music and Concert Band Program in Semester 2. We have been offering tuition on voice, piano, guitar and drums for some years now; this will be expanded to include flute, clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone and drums/percussion. We will be only one of two Schools in the region offering a comprehensive Concert Band/Instrumental Music Program.

A video demonstration of the instruments on offer is attached to this article, it is recommended that Parents/Carers watch it with their son or daughter. Students will have the opportunity to try each of the instruments they nominate (3 preferences are required) in the first few weeks of Term 3 to match the instrument best suited (we will try to accommodate their first preference), with COVID-safe protocols around instrument sterilisation.

Students will receive a weekly small-group lesson as well as a Beginner Band Class where students start preparing ensemble pieces for performances. All instruments will be available for hire through the College at competitive rates. Students will be provided with a tutor book and music record book at their first lesson by the College.

Lesson and instrument hire charges are outlined below. Fees will be placed on your College fee account at the start of each term (initial enrolment is based on a semester). A minimum of three weeks’ notice is required for discontinuing lessons (week 8 of a 10-week term) in writing to the Head of Music Performance.

Parents hiring an instrument will receive a hire agreement with all terms and conditions, which will need to be completed prior to the instrument being released to the student.

Parents of students in Years 7 to 10 are invited to complete an application form via this link,

Families will then receive an enrolment form via email which will need to be completed, sighed and returned to the College to Reception or via return email to music@crccs.vic.edu.au.

Expression of Interest are due by Friday 16 July, and applications for lessons are due by Friday 23 July. Applications received after this date will be processed and placed on a waiting list with students commencing as soon as a place becomes available (lesson charges will reflect the starting point in the term).

Students in Year 7 will be participating in an incursion on Monday 24 June by the Royal Australian Navy Band, where all instruments will be demonstrated.

Lessons are offered on a small group basis in Years 7 to 10 (with the exception of Voice and Piano), with the option of changing to individual lessons in Years 8 to 10. Lessons rotate through the normal school day. Students also attend the Beginner Band which rehearses during a lunchtime each week where they learn new ensemble pieces to perform at events throughout the year (this is a compulsory part of the Concert Band Program).

SACCSS Intermediate Girls AFL

By Mr Rannoch Wilkinson Sport Co-ordinator

On Thursday 6 May our intermediate Girls AFL team travelled to Royal Park to participate in the SACCSS Girls AFL tournament. After horrible weather earlier in the week, the girls were pleased to be greeted with warm sunshine and perfect conditions for playing football.

Mr Ray and Ms Consiglio had carefully selected the playing squad and run a number of training sessions at school and were ready to show what they had. The girls had a great win first up against Emmanuel and a narrow 1-point win against St Monica’s. Salesian then gave our girls a touch up with a 26 – 0 thrashing. Our girls were determined to make amends in the next match against another strong opponent in Mackillop. They outplayed Mackillop for the entire match, but inaccurate kicking meant the match ended in a draw. CRCCS then comfortably won the final match against CRC Melton, chasing a percentage boost in order to make the final. Despite a 3-goal win, it wasn’t quite enough for our girls to jump Mackillop on percentage and we missed the final for this year.

Congratulations to all of the girls for your strong efforts across the day and to Mr Ray and Ms Consiglio for coaching the team.

SACCSS Intermediate Futsal

By Mr Rannoch Wilkinson Sport Co-ordinator

On Monday 24 May, the Girls and Boys Intermediate Futsal teams travel to Albert Park to take on other SACCSS Colleges in the return to Futsal for 2021. Both teams had strong line ups and were confident of competing well across the day.

The Girls team had a lot to live up to in winning the shield in 2018 and 2019 with the pause due to lockdowns last year. Mr Ray, as coach this year, was keen to uphold the strength of the team and continue on a good run. They started well with good wins against Marymede and Emmanuel College before a few tough games against CRC North Keilor and the final group game against St Monicas. Both of these ended in wins to our girls and they went into the final against St Monicas undefeated and ready to battle it out for the shield. Our girls played exceptionally well and controlled the match ending up with a winning score line of 5 goals to 2.

Top scorers were Abbi Pavlinusic with an astounding 18 goals across the day and Nicole Santos with 8. Congratulations also to Nicole Santos in being awarded the best player in the Final.

Congratulations to all of the Girls and Mr Ray on your amazing efforts across the day.

The Boys also had a very strong line up selected and trained by Ms Petko. The boys also started well with comfortable wins against Salesian and Antonine College before facing the toughest challenge in Emmanuel College. The game was close throughout, ending in a 3 all draw and a preview of the final to come later. After winning the final 2 matches, the final was a rematch against Emmanuel with both teams keen to make up for the missed opportunity earlier. Our boys played exceptionally well, leading from the outset and outlasted Emmanuel to finish with a 3 – 1 win.

Well done to Brayden Portelli for being awarded the best player in the Final.

Congratulations to all of the Boys and Ms Petko for winning the shield and being promoted to division 1 for 2022.

Central Australia Cultural Immersion Tour

By Ms Linda Bracco Cultural Immersion Leader

Earlier this term, ten lucky Year 10 students took part in the 2021 Central Australia Cultural Immersion Tour. Students took part in a 9-day Best of the Red Centre Tour, which consisted of a visit to Uluru, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and an exhilarating Uluru camel ride. They also explored Alice Springs, the Earth Sanctuary, Royal Flying Doctors and much more.

"Seeing Alice Spring in the light was honesty eye-opening. It was a blend of country town and suburbia. In a way it reminds you of home…seeing the way people here interact with each other is truly magnificent…”

Mathematics Learning Area

By Ms Clara Cremona Millo Learning Area Leader Mathematics

The past few sessions of Maths Support have not been able to run. However, I do hope that once we go back to face to face learning, that we can restart the after school sessions, especially at this time when students are revising and studying for the upcoming test and exams.

Please see attached the Maths Support Sessions timetable for the remainder of the term. Please note that the running of these sessions will depend on the current restrictions for that day and week.

In the meantime, I encourage all students to contact and discuss with their respective teachers any difficulties they may be having with their Maths work or revision.

Good luck to all students on their assessments and exams!

Biggest Morning Tea Fundraiser

By Ms Matilda Mattar Social Justice and Service-Learning Leader

Fighting cancer is a cause close to many of our hearts. 27 May 2021 is the official date set by the Australian Cancer Council, whereby willing participants are invited to jump on board with Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.

CRCCS’ Staff Association got working on making this fundraising event a remarkable one. Starting with the Daffodil display, where staff were provided with an opportunity to remember their loved ones impacted by cancer. Moving closer to the day, staff were encouraged to bring their favourite teacups along, while enjoying a colourful spread full of yummies.

As always, we started to think of a creative way to get the students involved and aware of the fundraiser. After discussion with the Year 10 Food Technology class, it was decided that they would prepare some delights to sell at lunchtime in the form of a bake sale. It’s never easy getting students to prepare items that must remain in the kitchen, so a great deal of quality control (taste testing) took place, which was all part of the fun. Prior to whipping up a storm, the students were reminded of the cause behind the work they were about to embark on. It was comforting to see that these young adults fully understood the heart ache and pain that comes with cancer, as well as the glimpse of excitement sparked when doing something worthwhile to support the event. The Social Justice team took on the responsibility of running the sales on the day, while the Year 10’s stood around promoting the specific treats that they had prepared.

All in all, our College community was able to raise a total of $1237.10 ($350 thanks to the bake sale). Well done to the Staff Association, Year 10 Food Technology students, Social Justice team and to all who contributed to this wonderful cause.

God bless all your efforts!

Year 9 Forensic Science

By Ms Melissa Vickery Science Teacher

Students in Forensic Science have been learning about the role that DNA plays in Criminal Investigations. They have learnt that DNA contains genetic information that is located in the nucleus of cells, as well as how DNA collected from a crime scene can either link a suspect to the evidence or eliminate a suspect.

The aim of the practical activity was to extract strands of DNA from split pea cells. In order to successfully obtain the DNA strands our students had to be methodical in the procedure.

Year 9 Fashion

By Ms Catherine Mackay Art & Technology Assistant

Our Year 9 Fashion class are consolidating their new sewing skills through the ‘Peter Alexander design project’.

Students have researched the sleepwear designer Peter Alexander to further understand the design and construction process. They have been learning to read a commercial pattern, use the overlockers and develop sewing machine skills. The bright fabrics and enthusiasm of the students are resulting in some fantastic pyjama designs.

VSAC Swimming

By Mr Rannoch Wilkinson Sport Co-ordinator

After the SACCSS Swimming Carnival at the end of Term 1, SACCSS selected a team of students from all of the Colleges to represent SACCSS at the VSAC swimming championships on May 10. We were lucky enough to have 3 students invited to attend. Unfortunately, 1 couldn’t make it, but Scarlet Valor, 9 Bunjil and Chloe Burke, 7 Coranderrk represented our College, and SACCSS on the night.

The girls did an amazing job, giving their best and being part of the team. Scarlet competed in extra events across the night and Chloe had a PB in her breaststroke event. SACCSS ended up finishing the night in 9th place out of 15 sports associations from across Victoria, which is quite an achievement considering the targeted programs and resources of some of the larger sporting associations.

Congratulations to both girls on your achievement in being selected and in representing our College with pride.
